1.       What is Application Software?

An application program is computer program designed to perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks or activities for the benefit of the user.

1.       Licenced

Most software can be categorized according to its license type.

a.       Individual copy

The authorization gives one users the access to use the software package i.e. to install software on only one machine.


b.      Site Licence

It is a type of software license that allows the user to install a software package in several computers simultaneousl


c.       Network Licence

It is a powerful concept used by a number of based software products. Network licensing can help you to get the most from your software budget.


2.       Open Source

It allows software to be freely used, modified and shared.


3.       Shareware

It is distributed free on a trial basis with the understanding that the user may want or need to pay for it at a later time.


4.       Trialware

It is made available to users at no cost under certain conditions, it has a limited functionality to the commercial version of the same software. The license for the software may expire after a certain trial period.


5.       Freeware

It is made available free of charge but it is copyrighted by its developer who has the right to control its distribution, modify it and sell it in the future.


6.       Pirateware

Software that has been hacked so it doesn’t need a serial code.

Office software is a collection of commonly used applications.


a.       Wordprocessor

It is an application that performs the task of composing, editing, formatting and printing documents.


b.      Spreadsheet

This application enables to give your organization much greater control of your information.


c.       Database

Database is for collecting and organizing information. It can store information about people, products, order etc.


d.      Presentation

Presentations are like slide shows. You can include pictures, words and shapes that will build your PowerPoint.


2.       Specialist Systems

Sometimes a computer application requires unusual equipment and regular PC's are not up to the task.


a.       Financial Accounts

It is a system of collecting, storing and processing financial and accounting data that are used by decision makers.


b.      Personnel

This displays important information such as the CPU speed, MAC address, Ports, Memory (RAM), disk space and applications installed.


c.       Medical records

EHRs allow a patient’s health record to move them to other health care providers, specialists, hospitals, nursing homes and even across States.


d.      Medical diagnostic

The system asks a series of questions about the patient’s illness. The user answers with yes/no. The questions asked are based on the response to previous questions.


3.       Internet

The Internet carries a range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and applications of the World Wide Web (WWW), electronic mail and file sharing.


a.       Web browsers

It is commonly referred to as a browser, for retrieving, presenting and traversing information resources on the web. The most popular are Chrome, Edge and Safari.


b.      HTML editors

It is a computer program for editing HTML. The web pages can be written with any text editor.


c.       Email

Internet email messages consist of two major sections, the message header and the message body, collectively known as content. In the process of transporting email messages between systems, SMTP communicates delivery parameters and information using message header fields.


d.      Blogs

A blog is an ongoing online diary or commentary written by an individual rather than an organization.


e.      Wiki

The internet is the biggest world-wide communication network of computers. It has millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry many different kinds of information. The term is sometimes abbreviated as "The Net".


4.       Graphics

Graphics are pictures and films created using computers. It is known as generated image data created with help from specialized graphical hardware and software.


a.       Photo edit

It is an image editing application for digital photos. It is used to crop and edit photos as well as organise them into albums and slideshows.


b.      Drawing

Drawing is known as creating art on the computer. This software can be used by engineers and architects.


c.       Desk top publishing

It is known as DTP and is the creation of documents using page layout skills on computers ideally for printing. It generates layouts and produces quality text and images comparable to traditional printing.


d.      Paint

Paint is a software graphics program that allows the user to draw or paint images on a computer. Most are now discontinued e.g. KoulourPaint, XPaint, Deluxe Paint, MacPaint and Microsoft Paint.


5.       Recreation

Recreation management software manages your department through one user-friendly system. You can access it over the internet on a computer or mobile device. It also allows you to access information and tools in one place.


a.       PC games

A PC game is a video game that is played on a personal computer instead of a console. The games can be played without internet connection.


b.      Online games

Online game is a video game that is either partially or primarily played through the internet or on other networks available.


c.       Virtual Realities – Second Life & Open Sim

Second Life does not have a designated objective, nor traditional game play mechanics or rules. It can also be argued that Second Life is a multi-user virtual world, because the virtual world is centred around interaction between multiple users.

Open Sim is short for Open Simulator. It is free, open source software that allows anyone to create a virtual world and run in on their own computer.


d.      MMORPGs - World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft, is a 3D fantasy themed MMORPG set in the Warcraft universe. World of Warcraft is widely considered the "gold standard" of the entire MMO genre and, even though the game was launched back in 2004, it remains one of the most played MMORPGs in the world.
